Have you heard of Michael Gurian? He’s a nationally-known “boy guru” who’s written a number of books about boys, including The Minds of Boys, The Purpose of Boys and The Wonder of Boys.
His latest book, Raising Boys by Design: What the Bible and Brain Science Reveal About What Your Son Needs to Thrive, hits the shelves today, and we’re offering you a chance to win your very own copy.
Raising Boys by Design: What the Bible and Brain Science Reveal About What Your Sons Need to Thrive was co-written by Gurian and Christian psychologist Dr. Gregory Jantz. The book is a bold attempt to integrate biology, brain science and Biblical principles — and whether or not you believe in the Bible or in brain-based sex differences, this book is worth a read, because both the Bible and brain science are shaping the world our boys live in today.
Dr. Gurian will be on BuildingBoys later this month to discuss the book. I’m currently reading it, and would love to have some readers join me for a virtual book club. (If you’re interested, tell me in the comments; we’ll work out the logistics later.)
I have three copies of the book to give away. Want one? Here’s how you can enter our book giveaway:
- Leave a comment below, expressing your interest in the book club or sharing one thing you’ve learned about raising boy. If you’d prefer, you can leave a question about boys instead. Be sure to include your contact info, so I can contact you if you’re a winner. One comment = one entry. To earn additional entries, you can…
- Tweet the contest. Each tweet (up to one per day per entrant) equals one more entry. Please include our Twitter tag (@BuildingBoys so we know you’ve tweeted!
- Mention the contest on Facebook. Again, be sure to let us know. (You can find us on Facebook at BuildingBoys.)
- Mention the contest in a blog post and include a link back to BuildingBoys.
The contest will run through midnight Central Time Friday, September 27. The winner will be drawn at random via http://www.random.org/ and will be notified ASAP.
Good luck!

Would love it! I have two wonderful boys!
I may be interested in the book club. I’m always interested to learn more about how to raise boys & what makes them tick. One thing I’ve learned is that boys need affection & expressions of love just as much as girls. And I’ve also learned that they thrive on direct parent involvement – whatever project they’re working on or book they’re reading or video game they’re playing.
Since I only have a son while I grew up in a family with only daughters, I’m not sure I’m raising him based on his sex….just is what it is. Interested in reading.
Would love to read this. As my two boys grow older, I am always looking for ways to help them grow into positive, engaged and confident young men. Being raised an only child by mostly just my mom means I don’t always know how to make these things happen for my boys 🙂
I’d love to join your virtual book club! Bring it on!
I have a 13 year old and a 6 year old son who are completely different from each other. One is full of temper, and a manly man.. The other is a little genius boy. I would love a copy of this book! I want to give these guys the best upbringing I can, but I need to understand them first. I feel like I am clueless most of the time!
This seems like a great book. Would benefit from reading it!
Hi Vesta,
You’re a winner! Pls email your name and address to je******@je************.com, and we’ll get your copy of Raising Boys by Design to you ASAP.
I would like to read this book. I loved reading Michael Gurian’s The Wonder of Boys, and it has influenced me as I raise my two boys. One thing I learned in his book and that I can attest is true is that boys need SPACE. Space to move, run around, and play. I would be interested in your virtual book club, but I’m an extremely slow reader and can’t promise to finish in time! Thanks for the opportunity to win the book!
Would love it and would benefit from it immensely…as would my two incredible boys!
Hi – I’d love the book! I’ve been reading about raising girls a lot, but with my only boy just turned two I’m becoming more interested in all the “boy” issues out there!
Thanks.
I’m interested in the book club. One thing I’ve learned about boys is that their emotions have different triggers than girls, but they too are emotional creatures.
