When kids go to college, they don’t always make the wisest choices. Deciding factors on courses and location often center around what their friends are doing. Plus, after the stresses of school, many just want to study things which they enjoy. And, who can blame them?
But unless your son is one of the lucky ones, a film degree isn’t going to lead him into a career. It’s not unusual to spend four years studying, only to land in a starting retail position. And, that’s if he completes the course. A shocking amount of first years drop out when they realize their class won’t take them anywhere.
If this happens to your son, it’s crucial to get him back on track. In an ideal world, he’ll know what he wants to do from the off. But, if he does falter and make a wrong move, there’s no reason you can’t rectify the issue together. Here are a few of the steps you can encourage him to take if he tells you he isn’t happy:
Arrange a meeting with an advisor
The first step is to arrange a meeting with someone who can outline your son’s options. He might want to do this alone. But, he may want you to go along for support. If that’s the case, take a notepad and write down anything significant.
If the meeting takes place early in the year, there’s a chance he’ll be able to swap to a course which suits better. It’s not unheard of for this to happen, and if there’s a place on another course, he could get lucky. Equally, an advisor could suggest other options, such as extra classes to give your son more motivation.
Encourage him to consider his interests
If your son does get the chance to try again, it’s crucial you encourage him to consider courses he’d be happier in. You don’t want the same happening again, after all. The best way towards increased motivation is a course which leads to future career goals. So, sit down with him and discuss where he can see himself in the future. Even if he’s unsure to start, a discussion is sure to lead him to a conclusion.
Or, consider the alternatives
If he’s still determined to drop out after the meeting, all you can do is support him. It’s his life. That said, there’s nothing wrong with researching a few alternatives to put on the table. There are many practical ways to study outside of school. And, something like these supply chain online courses could take your son far. If education didn’t suit him, an option like this could be ideal. It also allows him to work while studying.
Talking of working while studying, he could opt for an on the job qualification, offered in fields like plumbing and building. These practical careers will set him up for life, college or not.
